THE CARPET CENTRE :: 300 YEARS & STILL GOING

So you might have noticed all the beautiful carpets I have been using in various projects like here & here and even in my own house... what do they all have in common? They are all from the Carpet Centre in Dubai. Not only can you browse and purchase the entire collection easily online , but you can also schedule an appointment to try out the carpet in your home for free! This has proved a total life saver when you are not quite sure which carpet to go for. I spoke to Habib Yaraghi, the co-owner of Carpet Centre who has lived in Dubai for 13 years and carries out this family business which has survived for more than 300 years with the same family that started it (this means they have survi

RACHA ELABBAS DESIGN :: BEYOND THE SQUARE KUFIK

Her splendid artwork is always the Cherry on top for any space... A Melange of Arabic Kufic typography in bright colour, making it so modern and slick yet warm and touching in meaning. Elabbas's vast experiences spins from being a graphic designer who relocated to Paris to pursue a her fashion studies at Parsons Paris where she discovered a passion for textiles and surface treatment. Spending a year in Jakarta took Racha back to the basics of the craft and inspired a series of illustrated interpretations leading to two collections of bold and rhythmic graphic scarves under the label Racha Elabbas. Her Racha Elabbas Designs brand though is yet another extension to the multi talented Designer'

DESIGN STORIES :: A GREY COMPROMISE (PART 4)

I will call this post the 'Great Finale!' The last room in the house mega makeover (here)! For the Master bedroom, the couple and I agreed that grey would be the way. We wanted the understated elegance and the comfort that comes with it. Although the walls were already grey, we changed the shade into a slightly bluer shade of grey picking Jotun's 'Evening Sky' for the big wall behind the bed and complimenting it with 'Objective'. The glamour and pizzaz came with our choice of bed which came from The One Fusion, the perfect combination of the material and its details. The greyish velvet with the golden studs, the mirror framing and the metallic wood took the room to the next level. That plus

DESIGN STORIES :: A GREY COMPROMISE (PART 2)

So if you have seen the previous post of this project's living & dining space (here) you would have already felt the laid back overall vibe to the house. I wanted this feeling to start right as you step into the house. For the entrance, I wanted a bit of shock, so we used the already existing wooden and brass console table and layered it with a huge image of a Lion (a twist on the cats in the house!) and added a bit of whimsy with a white porcelain horse, a white bone necklace and Jewellery box all siting on a backdrop of Jotun's 'Elegant Blue' Double height wall. Using my '5 Pieces Rule' again, the formula was applied as follows: Something Textured/Patterned:Jute Rug Something Shiny: Wall A

DESIGN STORIES :: A GREY COMPROMISE (PART 3)

Continuing with our previous project reveal posts, the living & dining room (here) and the entrance (here), we know reveal to you the kitchen breakfast area which is now a relaxed lounge for spending lazy afternoons continuing with the laid back vibe to the house. The breakfast area has direct entrance to the garden in the back meaning it can get quite messy as well with bbq's, and friends accessing the kitchen! The approach here was to keep it minimal yet clean. We got rid of the acid green walls and opted for Jotun's beautiful dark blue 'Oslo 5180' which contrasts beautifully with the white french doors. I replaced the old orange couch with an Ikea's Sofabed that proved handy when extra gu

DESIGN STORIES :: A GREY COMPROMISE (PART 1)

Edi Rama once said 'Compromise in Colors is Grey' and we love it! We are over the moon with this particular project, you must have been following our snaps on 'HarfNoon' or was seeing all the instagram posts... this project is extra special as it's a friend's house! They had been considering moving houses, then decided to stay in their wonderful neighbourhood of the Arabian Ranches and completely makeover the house instead. The space was dark and outdated with lots of beiges and browns and since the solid wood floors were rosewood in colour we wanted to flood the house with a lot more light giving the family of four (and three cats!) a fresh retreat where one can just chill and watch a footb
